1967 Pontiac GTO

• Well-documented frame-off restoration
• 400-cid 4-bbl. V-8 engine
• Attractive color combination

Driven less than 100 miles since completion of a frame-off restoration, this Regimental Red 1967 GTO hardtop is ready to turn heads at cruises and gather kudos at car shows.

Pontiac ushered in the muscle car era in a haze of burning rubber when it introduced the GTO in mid-1964. The GTO package for the intermediate-sized Pontiac Tempest bundled a performance-tuned full-size Pontiac 389-cid V8 with bucket seats, special wheels and more. GM brass thought Pontiac might move 5,000 GTOs that first year. By the end of the model run, more than 32,000 had been sold.

For 1966, Pontiac made the hot-selling GTO an official model, available in 2-door hardtop, 2-door pillared coupe and convertible styles. These cars’ sleek new bodies would be continued with only minor changes for 1967. Bright aluminum mesh inserts within the Pontiac signature split grille distinguishes the ’67 GTO from the front. At the rear, the four narrow horizontal taillights slotted into each end of the rear panel give the ’67 away. The lower body side bright trim is also bolder, and highlights the body form better, on the 1967 GTO.

An especially pleasing styling touch on the 1966-’67 GTO hardtops is the sleek and much admired semi-fastback roofline, which flows beautifully into the rear deck. The flat rear window is inset between the roof’s “sail panel” extensions.

For 1967, the GTO’s legendary 389 V8 was replaced by a derivative 400-cid V8 developed by Pontiac engineers. A 335-hp 4-bbl. version of the new engine was standard in the 1967 GTO. A non-numbers matching 400-cid Pontiac V8 with 4-bbl. carburetor powers the offered GTO.

The GTO is equipped with the optional three-speed TH-400 automatic transmission, which included the Hurst Dual-Gate floor shift. It incorporates a notched gate with positive stops for driver control of shifts, while a conventional straight selector gate alongside provides regular range selection. The Hurst “his ’n hers” shifter is placed in the handsome console that accompanies the GTO’s standard front bucket seats.

A handsome and sporty interior was a GTO hallmark from the very first. The ’67 carried the tradition forward nicely. Door and seat trim pattern changes, and a new three-spoke steering wheel, were the only readily obvious differences from 1966.

Options on the GTO include a rear window defogger, power antenna, and power steering and brakes. It also has the factory optional console-mounted manifold vacuum gauge. A supplemental panel of Stewart Warner analog gauges shows oil pressure, coolant temp and battery amps.

The car is fitted with Pontiac Rally II design 15-inch stamped steel wheels. They are mounted with 225/60R-15 BF Goodrich COMP/TA tires.

Pontiac equipped all of its 1967 cars, including the GTO, with a number of new safety features. These included a dual-circuit braking system, energy-absorbing steering column, seat-back locks, and four-way flashers.

The 1967 GTO represented the final refinement of the original 1964 concept; a new body and chassis would debut for 1968. Albeit perhaps slightly more ‘civilized’ than the original 1964 car, the ’67 still fully retained its “Tiger” prowess in the increasingly crowded muscle car market.

An original 1967 Pontiac factory service manual and owner’s manual accompany our offered GTO. Documentation of its restoration work, including pictures of the work in progress, and the invoice for the completed project, is available.

Looking sharp in its Regimental Red with black interior color combination, the GTO is more than a muscle car—it’s a time machine. Nudge its big V8 into action and the whole “scene” that was the ’60s muscle car era comes roaring back. If you’re seeking that GTO you’ve always wanted, or looking to add a frame-off restored ’67 hardtop to your collection, here’s one definitely worth checking out.
