1967 International Harvester - $10,900 - Orange Village, OH - Older restoration in good condition. 266 cubic inch V8, manual transmission. No frills, but an unusual, solid, clean old truck that’s ready to enjoy.
If you’re looking for a neat old pickup, one that can still spend Saturday morning at Home Depot and Sunday morning at a car show, this 1967 International Harvester should do the trick. It was given a frame-off restoration about 15 years ago, and while the intent wasn’t to create a show truck, they did manage to make on that’s pretty darned nice. The truck itself was impressively solid and doesn’t look like it was forced into hard labor for its working career. Both the cab and bed were removed from the frame and stripped to bare metal, then the finish was rebuilt from there. The original color was turquoise, but during the rebuild it got a coat of GM Alpine White, which is a little softer than plain old refrigerator white and looks fantastic on the old truck’s sheetmetal. The brightwork is minimal, but most of it is stainless, so it shines up easily and will look good practically forever, while the front bumper appears original and the rear bumper is fresh chrome diamond-plate.
Inside, it’s minimalist the way pickups were before we put them into service as luxury vehicles. The original bench seat was upholstered in green fabric, which works nicely with the off-white paint. Rubber mats on the floor keep it easy to maintain and ready to work in the dirt, and the controls are the same that you’ve been using for decades, right down to the 3-speed shifter on the floor. A full array of instruments look like vintage Stewart-Warner pieces with shiny metallic faces and pointers that are only a little faded, and they all work correctly. There’s also a powerful under-dash heater/defroster unit, but that’s about it for comfort and convenience frills.
The engine is International’s rugged and unique 266 cubic inch V8. Small enough to be thrifty but delivering the torque and power of eight cylinders, it’s a great choice. It was rebuilt during the restoration and runs superbly today, with a great V8 burble from the exhaust. The three-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and the rear end is geared for hauling, not high speeds, but it’s happy on the highway at modern velocities. It’s quite clean underneath, with a black powdercoated frame and traces of the original turquoise paint still visible on the bottom of the bed, but there’s nothing to worry about as far as rust or damage. Black steel wheels with simple hubcaps are the right look, and they’re fitted with modern Firestone radials for load carrying comfort.
Trucks are incredibly popular right now, and this is an affordable, fun old hauler that will get a lot of second glances simply because it’s unusual. For fans of the International Harvester brand, this is the only way to get a job done.
